Are You Knight Worthy?

In one of the most memorable scenes from Game of Thrones, we witness Jaime Lannister knight Brienne of Tarth, breaking traditional norms and recognizing her true worth. Jaime’s words resonate deeply: “In the name of the warrior, I charge you to be Brave. In the name of the father, I charge you to be just. In the name of the mother, I charge you to protect the innocent.”

While the characters in Game of Thrones are fictional, these principles are not. If that was the standard, how many people you know would be deemed “knight-worthy”?

As insurance professionals, the essence of these knightly virtues parallels our roles and responsibilities in the industry. Whether we are adjusting claims, underwriting new business, or championing DEI initiatives, we embody bravery by navigating complex challenges with integrity. We uphold justice by ensuring fairness and equity in our decisions, and we protect the vulnerable by advocating for the marginalized and ensuring everyone’s needs are met.

Are you brave?

Bravery in our field means facing complex claims head-on, navigating challenging situations, and making tough calls with integrity. It’s about stepping up when others step back, ensuring fairness and justice prevail.

It is also about speaking up against biases, confronting discriminatory practices, and pushing for systemic change.

“Bravery is the capacity to perform properly even when scared half to death.”

⁃ John Maxwell

Are you just?

Justice is at the core of our work. It involves advocating for our clients, ensuring that claims are handled equitably, and that the truth prevails. Being just means upholding ethical standards, fighting against fraud, and maintaining impartiality in every case we handle.

It is also promoting fairness and equal opportunities for everyone, regardless of their background. It involves dismantling barriers that prevent marginalized groups from thriving and ensuring equitable treatment in all aspects of our work.

“Justice means giving each person what is due to them, not only in law but in all our dealings with others.”

⁃ Jim Rohn

Do you protect the weak?

Protecting the vulnerable is crucial in our profession. We ensure that those who have suffered losses are supported and compensated fairly. It’s about being a beacon of hope and stability for individuals and businesses during their toughest times.

It is also about creating inclusive environments where everyone feels safe, supported, and valued.

“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.”

Proverbs 31:8-9

When you look in the mirror, ask yourself: are you a true knight in your role as an insurance professional? Are you standing strong in the face of adversity, ensuring justice prevails, and protecting the vulnerable?

To be knight-worthy isn’t just about honor and title; it’s about action, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to uphold these values. Our industry needs knights who live out these principles daily.
