HEADWINDS

By Rod Patterson, MBA

There is no doubt that the movement to make the corporate playing field more diverse has an uphill climb in the coming years. In Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s book, “Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?” he shared an exchange he had on a flight from the United States to Europe. He inquired about the length of the flight. The pilot advised that going to Europe would take about 9 hours, but coming back would take 12 hours. Dr. King asked about the difference in travel time based on the same distance. The pilot explained that when they leave, they have the tailwinds at their back, but when they return, they are flying into the headwinds. Dr. King related that story to the Civil Rights Movement towards justice. His point was that while at a certain point the Civil Rights Movement had tailwinds moving them forward, they were about to fly into some headwinds. It would take longer to get the justice they so deserved, but they would get it.

Today, in 2025, we are coming off the benefit of the tailwinds of the last five years marked by the tragic murder of George Floyd. We are now flying into the headwinds of a new administration that has not minced words about their attitude towards DEI. When planes fly into headwinds, they have to do the following:

– Increase power

– Adjust the flight path

– Conserve energy

The increase in power allows the plane to overcome the wind. Pilots will adjust the flight path to account for the direction and speed of the wind. Flying into headwinds can cause the plane to consume more energy due to the longer flight time. The pilot must carry additional fuel for the journey.

In our journey for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, we will need to increase our power. Reaffirm our connections with our allies and be prepared to stand firm on our values and principles. It will also require us to change course. We have to exhibit wisdom to navigate the current political climate we are in. We cannot fight on all fronts at all times. Finally, we must conserve our energy. Practice self-care and avoid unnecessary battles and arguments.

This can still be a banner year for DEI if we don’t quit. We may be delayed, but justice and equality will not be denied.

“Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble.” -John Lewis
