That old jingle — “I don’t wanna grow up, I’m a Toys R Us kid…” — used to light me up as a little boy. My cousin and I would sing it loud on the subway, laughing like life was simple. Back then, it was just childhood.
But as I got older, that tune started to mean something else.
I began to notice how many adults were living with a kid mindset — grown on the outside, but still reacting and choosing like they never left their teenage years. Not childish in age, but in habits.
And if we’re honest, we’ve all been there.
Staying the same feels easier than facing ourselves.
Comfort feels safer than accountability.
We want the benefits of adulthood without the discipline it requires.
But staying stuck costs you and strains relationships. While at the same time, slow your progress.
It keeps you repeating the same mistakes.
The good news: you’re not stuck. You can grow — one honest choice at a time.
Here are 3 ways to stop living like a Toys R Us kid:
1. Be Real With Yourself
Growth starts with honesty. No excuses. No blame. Just truth. You can’t change what you won’t confront.
2. Stop Running From Hard Things
People stay stuck because they avoid discomfort. Growth requires leaning into it. Stretching hurts, but staying small hurts more.
3. Choose People Who Push You Higher
Your circle matters. If everyone around you is stuck, you will be too. Surround yourself with people who challenge and sharpen you.
Growing up isn’t about age — it’s about ownership.
It’s about stepping into the person God has been calling you to become.
So let me ask you with a little nostalgia and a lot of love:
Are you still a Toys R Us kid… or are you ready to grow up?
