Change vs Pseudo Change

How do you define change?

Change is:

A) Talking about change

B) Planning to change

C) Deciding to change

D) Change

Let’s consider each.

Talking about change:

Talk is not necessarily cheap. Talking about change is important to get clarity and consensus. Talking about change can lead to change, but it could also be just talk. Therefore, talking about change is not change.

Planning to Change:

Planning is also essential when it comes to making a change. It is true that when you fail to plan you plan to fail. A good plan gets you from thought to accomplishment, but a plan without execution is useless. Planning is not change.

Making a Decision to Change:

All change begins with a decision. That is a common saying of my pastor and it is true. Indecision leads to procrastination and procrastination is a thief of blessings. However, making the decision to change is not change.

Change is change.

When change is essential, a failure to change makes you vulnerable.

As you evaluate your progress, don’t be tricked into believing that activity (talking, planning, deciding) is progress. Change is a process, but change must also be measurable and done in reasonable time, and most importantly, change.

Change is painful, but nothing is as painful as staying stuck somewhere you don’t belong.

Mandy Hale

Change must be embraced even if it is difficult, whether it be letting go of old habits or stepping out of one’s comfort zone. Discomfort of change is temporary, while the pain of staying stuck in a situation can be long-lasting.

If you’ve been talking about change, planning to change, or even made the decision to change, isn’t it time to take action? While change is a process, it must also be measurable and done in reasonable time. This is true whether it is about losing weight or DEI initiatives.

So, take action today towards the change you want to see in your life and remember, when change is essential, a failure to change makes you vulnerable.

Would love to know your thoughts. Post them here.

  1. Great lessons and food for thought, Rod.
The challenge for me at times of transitioning into seasons is deciding exactly what is necessary for the change, how to change, and then have the courage to follow through with the change. For sure, the change is necessary to move forward and get unstuck so it’s like you said, “take action”. Even if the action may not completely cause the change to fully manifest, at least I would have gotten a step closer to learn what did and did not work and therefore make the necessary correction with God’s help, trusting that He will guide me. Thanks Rod. Gwen

    P.S. (what is DEI initiatives)

    • Thank you, Gwen! There is a movement in the corporate space to bring about real change with respect to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). I am a part of that movement.

      • How awesome! God is moving in His purposed laborers and servants everywhere. I wish you good success in the corporate realm with the DEI movement. It is surely needed. Will put it on my prayer list and keep it in prayer. Be well and remain safe. Gwen

  2. Great words for all to read. Speaking for myself,I try to plan for positive tasks in what ever I am able to control, however with large groups my fear maybe having to get everyone on the same page( some may not be ready)to execute and recieve a positive return. Great reading and will share with others especially the youths of today.

  3. Simple and to the point. I like this. My issue is now which actions to take especially without someone to guide. I’ve been mentored before and it most cases concerning career I’ve had a (human) guide. These days it seems to be more of being guided by God but trying to discern God from the world. But i believe I’m moving more now than last year.

Again thank you for this. Would like to talk to you about REI. My agency is doing it but i don’t think it’s working. Would like to know what progress your group(s) are making.

  4. I define change as being a part of life. Sometimes it can be difficult to deal with when its new but it also can be for the better. I had to deal with many changes throughout my life and it wasn’t easy. I learned to realize that maybe it was for the best and that change is something that we all have to accept whether it is good or bad.
